More people should ask themselves this question. Good one. I will say though, in the specific case of Mediclinic and the competition commission, it is right that the merger was approved. Mediclinic often relies on economies of scale to provide quality (affordable too despite government meddling in healthcare that has drived up prices) in smaller towns like the one I live in. A mediclinic hospital is the only private hospital we have.

Plus Zakhele Mthembu of the FMF has written many articles on how the (anti-)competition commission doesn't really promote competition. I recently bought a new fibre line, people in my town who got the service before me were able to contract with Vumatel directly, but the competition commission has forced them to add an additional company between them and the customer to act as ISP, the so-called ISP is useless, practically speaking all they do is bill me, when I have a support query Vumatel ends up resolving it. The so-called ISP can't even communicate the correct issue to Vumatel, I end up having to talk to Vumatel myself.

Now imagine how much cheaper my fibre line would be without the government attempt at creating competition.
