Relations between South Africa and the United States are deteriorating rapidly. The US has introduced new visa restrictions targeting certain South Africans, with Washington raising concerns about race-based policies, land expropriation and incitement. The South African government has pushed back, arguing that its policies are being misrepresented and defending South Africa’s sovereignty.
But is this really an attack on South African sovereignty, or is Pretoria facing the consequences of years of worsening relations with Washington?
In this episode of the Rational Standard Podcast, we unpack the growing US-SA diplomatic conflict, including South Africa’s race-based policies, BEE, expropriation, the “Kill the Boer” controversy, Pretoria’s foreign policy, its relationship with Israel and the ICJ case, and the broader question of whether South Africa has unnecessarily alienated the United States and other Western partners.
We also ask:
• Why has the US introduced visa restrictions against certain South Africans?
• Is America interfering in South Africa’s sovereignty?
• Does sovereignty also give the US the right to decide who enters its territory?
• How much of the dispute is about BEE and racial policy?
• Has South Africa’s foreign policy damaged its relationship with Washington?
• Is Pretoria genuinely non-aligned, or has it moved closer to governments hostile to Western interests?
• Should foreign policy be driven by moral principles abroad or by South Africa’s economic and strategic interests at home?
• And how much could deteriorating US-South Africa relations ultimately cost ordinary South Africans?
The visa dispute may be only the latest chapter in a much bigger confrontation between Donald Trump’s United States and Cyril Ramaphosa’s South Africa.
America is a failing empire. The last time I checked, its sovereign debt was more than $40 trillion.
