Thanks, Econ Bro, another clear and well argued insight into some rediculous situations which are continuing to prevail in spite the damaged done by state monopolies. South Africa is a prime case study of precisely what you argued. The state monopoly in South Africa is a total failure, with all its monopolies failing to a frightening extent. Yet we see the same government spending a lot of energy on "preventing possibly evil private monopolies", many of which attempts are just aimed at extracting rent for some suspicious beneficiaries (insiders) as a condition for approval of mergers, for instance. Our Competition Commission can add much more value to the country by tackling and dismantling one after the other failed South Aftican state monopoly, of which there are many...
